Support for Emotional Needs, Anxiety & Pupil Wellbeing

Support for emotional needs, anxiety and pupil wellbeing:
If your child is struggling with their emotions, finding it hard to cope with anxiety, finding it difficult to come into school or facing family difficulties such as a divorce or bereavement then we can offer them counselling support. We offer three levels of support at Maidenbower Junior School:

ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant)- This are half hour weekly sessions with our trained ELSA working on emotional issues such as anxiety, confidence, friendship issues and emotional regulation. Support tends to last around half a term.

Pastoral TA Counselling- This is half hour counselling support with our Pastoral TAs who have been trained in counselling. This can be for a range of issues including anxiety, emotional issues, school avoidance and issues at home. Support tends to last between half a term to a term.

Play Therapy with the School Counsellor- We have a fully trained school counsellor who comes into school every week, working on more complex issues through play therapy- support tends to last around a term.
Any member of staff at school can make a referral for counselling. Parents may also make a request for counselling- either speak to your child’s class teacher or email the school via the office email address. Parents permission is needed before children start the sessions and all counselling sessions are confidential. It is also recommended that if your child is receiving counselling outside of school they should not receive counselling within school. Due to high demand for counselling there can be a wait before your child starts with one of our pastoral staff.

Wellbeing- We also offer wellbeing support for children through our wellbeing TA, Miss Rands and our pastoral room, known as The Den. Miss Rands runs daily breakfast club for children who may find it difficult to come into school in the morning or just need a quieter start to the school day. There is a lunchtime club as well as a range of sessions throughout the day for children who are finding certain aspects of school life challenging.
